Laser Hair Removal Market Trends

It is predicted that by 2029, the European laser hair removal market size will have nearly tripled its worth to £542 million.

Globally, more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of laser hair removal as a long-lasting solution for unwanted hair. This increased awareness is driving the demand.

The availability of laser hair removal at specialised clinics, along with financing options that make the treatment more affordable, has made it accessible to a wider range of consumers.

The growing societal acceptance of body positivity and self-care has normalised laser hair removal as a confidence-boosting treatment. This cultural shift has contributed to the increasing popularity of laser hair removal, which prioritises personal grooming and well-being.

How popular is laser hair removal?

According to All White Laser, laser hair removal is a popular treatment, with over 1.1 million treatments in the UK alone in 2019. This trend is expected to continue, with a projected growth rate of 15.2% from 2020 to 2027.

laser hair removal statistics google trends search of laser hair removal

Using Google Trends, we found the search term 'laser hair removal' is on the rise, with peaks from 2021 to 2024. This could be due to more people looking for more permanent hair removal instead of shaving and at-home hair removal. This rising trend coincides with the projected growth of the laser hair removal market during this period.

In 2024, there were around 513,800 monthly searches for laser hair removal globally, with the USA making up 48% of those searches and the UK ranking second with 14%.

The high interest in laser hair removal could be due to many reasons. The global population of diverse skin tones and hair types require effective and safe hair removal solutions.

The growing acceptance of cosmetic procedures and the desire for smooth, hair-free skin have fueled the demand for laser hair removal treatments.

Laser hair removal offers a long-lasting and convenient alternative to traditional hair removal methods like shaving and waxing, which appeals to many. The availability of advanced laser technologies, such as Alexandrite, Diode, and Nd: YAG lasers, in reputable clinics, has made it easier for people to access safe and effective treatments tailored to their specific needs.

How effective are laser hair removal treatments?

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology evaluated the effectiveness of laser hair removal on 30 female participants. It found that professional laser treatments resulted in an 85% reduction in hair on the right underarm and an 88% reduction on the left underarm after 6 sessions, compared to 52% and 46.3% with an at-home laser.

The study also noted that participants with Fitzpatrick skin type IV (olive skin tone) experienced more significant hair reduction than those with type III (darker white to light brown skin). This is due to those with darker skin having higher pigment concentration in the hair follicles.

Is laser hair removal painful?

According to a study by Collins Cosmetic Clinic, 48% of participants reported mild pain, 36% moderate pain, and only 6% experienced severe pain during laser treatments.

Pain thresholds vary from patient to patient, explaining the varying levels of discomfort experienced. Areas with thinner skin, such as the face, underarms, or bikini line, tend to be more sensitive and may cause greater discomfort than areas with thicker skin.

Different Types of Laser Hair Removal Treatments

You can have a hair removal procedure virtually anywhere on the body, and these are the most common that we see in our clinic:

  1. Legs

  2. Under Arms

  3. Face

  4. Top Lip

  5. Arms

  6. Chest

  7. Back

The most common search for hair removal areas was for "facial laser hair removal", pointing to a significant demand for laser hair removal treatments specifically targeting the face.
